Beauty Tip: Say NO to (certain) Lip Scrubs! Find out Why!

Due to being a born and raised Canadian girl, it has now become the coldest time of year, when my skin absolutely does not cooperate! I use lip balm daily (Nivea Lip Butter in Vanilla and Macadamia), but my lips seem to chap at times regardless of using lip balm. I decided to look up a few at home lip scrub recipes and came across one that consisted of: Coconut oil, cinnamon, and sea salt. I substituted the sea salt for Pink Himalayan Salt (so extra of me I know! But the benefits!!) and I went ahead concocted my mixture and noticed it melted into the creases of my lips as I let it sit and saturate. BIG MISTAKE, I should've known better once it said coconut oil. My skin does NOT take to coconut oil, olive oil, etc. A week later I developed an odd looking growth, (bump, ingrown bump?) which hurt, and looked just as awful! It became so dark and is now starting to peel in various layers. I have never been so upset, so I advise you all to be cautious with certain oils when using it anywhere on the face. As a remedy and desperation to heal fast, I have been using my regular face wash routine, black soap as a cleanser, apple cider vinegar mixed with water as a toner, and Green Beaver Green Tea All Natural Moisturizer

Nonetheless, Don't let my bad experience alarm you! There are multiple great uses for these natural ingredients, and those benefits include:

Benefits of Coconut Oil on Skin and Lips  (Not on the face -_-)
  • Antioxidant properties: Rich Vitamin E source, which acts as an amazing moisturizer, especially for dry skin, while also restoring damaged skin cells.
  • On lips: prevents cracked, dry lips, by locking in moisture, while also removing dead skin cells, replacing them with restored, soft lips.
  • Acts as a natural sunscreen with an SPF of 3, not complete coverage, but will do in case of not having a backup!

Benefits of Pink Himalayan Salt on Skin, via: Empowered Sustenance

  • Detoxifies the body by balancing systemic pH
  • Improves hydration by providing trace minerals
  • Improves mineral status of the body
  • Reduces muscle cramps by improving minerals and hydration
  • Helps balance blood sugar

Benefits of Cinnamon on Skin:
  • Naturally rich in antioxidants, and possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Often used as a lip plumper
  • Great for relief of acne

With That being said, these are all wonderful, and natural ingredients that each do wonders on health and the skin. What may not work for me may possibly work for you. Next time I will use less coconut oil and monitor it touching my face. Other than that, my lips were super smooth, minus the damage it did to my skin from clogging my pores. I am now in recovery with the use of steaming, tea tree oil, as well as Palmer's Cocoa Butter Eventone Correcting Face Oil ($11 CDN at Walmart) which is amazing for dark spots and evening tone with natural oils, (also an amazing moisturizer!).
